First thoughts – Kodak Zi6 HD Video Camera
Posted on February 3rd, 2009 by tomacintosh in uncategorized, tags: imovie '09, kodak zi6My new Kodak Zi6 arrived yesterday. Incase some of you haven’t heard of it, it’s a pocket-sized HD Video Camera, capable of 720p (1280 x 720) recordings. It can even do 720p @ 60fps which is pretty impressive for something roughly the size of an iPod! The four recording options are, 720p @ 60fps, 720p @ 30fps, VGA (640 x 480) and 3MP Still Image. The camera itself doesn’t have a whole lot of features or options, but for £99 you can’t really argue. If you want to see the unboxing pictures then head on over to my Flickr page. I have also posted a quick test video made in iMovie ’09.

Kodak Zi6
I’m quite happy with the quality to be honest, the only trouble is I’m still waiting for my 16GB SDHC card to turn up because the built in memory only lets you record 23 seconds of video at the highest setting! Come back soon for a full review.

Hi Tom – Sam sent me over here to read your review as I’m thinking of getting a Zi6. Thing I want to know is whether it’ll work with iMovie on a G5 iMac. What does it record footage as? Is it some flavour of MPEG/H.264 or is it AVCHD? I think you can only do AVCHD with an Intel mac. Any ideas?
Hi Phil, this camera records using H.264/AAC, it’s very good quality to be fair, very impressed so far. Your G5 should handle it fine.
