Oh dear, it seems the rumors of an Apple Netbook just won’t go away. Last week we heard reports of Apple buying up 10″ screens from China, and today it’s a Russian magazine supplying us with these apparent pictures depicting a ‘MacBook mini’. Both MacRumors and 9to5Mac are running the story, but no word on whether they are fake or not. There is even a supposed spec sheet aswell:

- 10.4″ WXGA display.
- 1280 x 768 pixel with LED backlighting.
- NVIDIA MCP79
- Intel Atom Z740 1.83GHz with 1MB L2 cache.
- 2GB DDR3-800.
- NVIDIA GeForce 9400M
- 64GB Solid State Drive.
- Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n
- 1 x USB 2.0
- 1 x Mini Display Port
- Battery Li-Ion 5100mA

Personally if Apple released that very machine tomorrow, I’d be all over it like a rash! The Samsung NC10 would be straight on eBay!!

Update

It’s been pretty much confirmed as a fake (I knew it deep down)

With the announcement that Apple are to stage an event on Tuesday 17th March to showcase the upcoming version 3.0 of the iPhone OS, everyone is left wondering if this means a new iPhone is also on the way.

It happened last year..

This time last year Apple did a similar thing. They held an iPhone OS 2.0 software roadmap event on the 6th of March. During this event they unveiled the new OS to the public, showcasing some of it’s more impressive features. The update was dated for a June 2008 release. Around the corner was Apple’s next big event, WWDC 2008, here they officially announced the iPhone 3G, and told us it would come with OS 2.0 installed.

Repeat performance?

This year the OS 3.0 event is taking place slightly later in the month, but the fact it is taking place at a similar time is interesting. Is this going to be a yearly focus? I certainly hope so. Website iPhoneFootprint have worked out possible dates for this years WWDC based on bookings taken by the Moscone Centre. The two possibilities are May 16th-22nd and June 6th-12th. The latter of which seems to be the more likely choice. So this keeps everything in a similar time frame to last years goings on, but is there any evidence yet of a new iPhone?

CSI Cupertino..

So all we really have to go on is dates. What other evidence has cropped up? Well, earlier this year we were treated to some ‘leaked’ pictures of a new iPhone casing, supposedly showcasing a new metal back, akin to the iPod Classics. Then just a few days ago we heard news of O2 UK planning on cutting the iPhone prices in May. When you put all the circumstantial evidence together, it sure does seem like a new iPhone is imminent.

All signs are pointing to Apple releasing a complete refresh of their iMac product line. In the past few weeks resellers have all reported dwindling stocks. Macrumors have received a picture which looks like a piece of Apple marketing describing the iMac as having “High performance NVIDIA graphics”. Now the current high end 24-inch model does use a GeForce 8800GS but this image clearly states both screen sizes.

If they do release the aforementioned updates I expect the low end 20-inch model to use the same GeForce 9400m GPU/Chipset that the new MacBook’s use. Not only would this keeps costs down, but it is also a very capable GPU in it’s own right. Expect all other models to use the 9400m in a similar way to the new MacBook Pro, i.e along side a more powerful GPU. I also have a feeling Apple will stick a Core 2 Quad CPU in the high end 24-inch model. I might be suprised and find they’ll also use one in the high end 20-inch aswell, but I’m not so sure.

Rumors were rife pre Macworld that Apple were planning on releasing an updated version of their Mac mini product. This said update would include newer processors, faster bus speeds and also the GeForce 9400m GPU/Chipset combo seen in the latest MacBooks. This never materialized, the new mini was never announced, and was soon forgotten without much complaint. Well, new rumors are bound to surface, and it seems that they have, this time in the form of a video posted on metacafe, a video sharing website. The video shows what appears to be an updated Mac mini sporting no less than 5 USB ports, a mini-DVI port, aswell as the newest standard, Mini Display Port. Now the first thing that struck me about the video was, it’s still the same design. Surely Apple would update it? Surely they would change the top to be black?

Judging by the images the casing appears to be made of metal and favours a more grippy, matte finish, reminiscent of the latest iMacs. This is welcome news for many I’m sure you’ll agree. I have to say I preferred the more solid and grippier feel of the original iPhone to the current version. I’m kind of sad there is no sign of a hole for a camera flash. If these pictures are real it will be interesting to see how Apple plan on getting around weak signal issues. Anyway, check out the pics below.

Indeed they go on to speculate that Apple will fitting the new model with an internal, non-removable battery pack that promises vastly superior running time compared with the 13″ and 15″ models.

If this is true it will be the second laptop Apple have offered with a non-removable battery, the MacBook Air already sports an internal battery, much like the design of the iPod’s and iPhone’s. Whether this is a good idea remains to be seen. Any laptop owner will tell you, batteries don’t last a very long time. From experience alone I’d say batteries in Apple’s previous range of laptops will start detriorating after hitting 200 charging cycles. Do Apple have a new battery technology ready to set free?

As Macworld quickly approaches the rumor mill is running wild on possible new Apple products and updates. Here’s a run down of what we’ve been hearing the most.

Mac Mini – new update to include faster processors, N-spec WiFi, the same GeForce 9400m used in the new MacBook’s. The other rumors suggest Apple will be including a removable SATA optical drive in the new Mini, this can then supposedly be swapped for another SATA hard drive for those wishing to use their Mini as a Media Hub. Aesthetically the new Mini is said to swap the white top of the current model with black to bring it in line with the new Apple look.

iPhone nano – case manufacturers around the globe are slipping up with listings for a new iPhone nano model. Usually when you start finding this happening from multiple sources you know something is going on. But how can Apple dumb down the existing iPhone? By making it smaller but with the same features, it would surely just attract everyone to the nano? My guess, no GPS, no Camera and less Memory.

Mac Media Centre – probably my most wanted Apple product ever. If, like me, you have a big media library on your main Mac at home, what happens when you have a multiple Macs in the household? Most of us have laptops these days, what happens then? Do you keep a totally separate library on your laptop? What about playlists, ratings, play counts and iTunes purchases? All this needs to resolved and quickly. I bought a Time Capsule and had limited success turning into a truly useable Media Hub.

Netbook or Mac Tablet – I think it’s highly unlikely we’ll see either of these products at Macworld. I’m guessing these will make an appearance towards to mid part of 2009, maybe even in the fall, depending on market conditions.

My guess is Apple will either release a software update for the Time Capsule enabling it to become a true Media Hub, or they will market the new Mac mini as one. For me the way to go would be the Time Capsule. If you think about it the Time Capsule comes in two sizes, 500gb or 1TB. The most anybody would fit in the rumored Mac mini at the moment would be 2 x 320GB drives. It makes sense to go with the Time Capsule because it also uses a network grade drive making it less susceptible to failure. The only problem you would face then is that you’d be using your backup drive to store all the files you really should be backing up in the first place!
